Bubble tea, also called boba, originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. It usually contains tea, milk or fruit flavors, and chewy tapioca pearls called “bubbles.” Popular flavors include classic milk tea, taro, matcha, and strawberry. The drink has grown popular worldwide and has many creative variations.
History of Bubble Tea
Bubble tea was first created in Taiwan in the 1980s. Two tea shops, Chun Shui Tang and Hanlin Tea Room, both claim to have invented it. It spread quickly across Taiwan and then internationally. Today, bubble tea is a cultural icon with countless flavors and toppings. National Bubble Tea Day is celebrated on April 30 in Taiwan.
